A 12th generation weaver from Kutch Gujarat , Damji Premji Vankar not only takes pride in displaying and demonstrating his unique art through exhibitions and workshops but also trains other enthusiastic weavers as well. He took 22 months to complete the intricate hand woven stole that won him a national award in 2006.
Damji Premji’s father was a Shilp Guru and he is the recipient of the President’s National Award for his exquisite natural dyed weavings in cotton with supplementary silk weft. He also dyes his own yarns. His interest in natural dyeing evolved from his father’s training.
Premji Bhai have been working together with his brothers a sense of belonging and managing to revive this rare craftsmanship of Kutch. They have been using innovations within the boundary of local culture and coming out various designs and threads of weaving. The fabrics are simply superb.
They have been working and experimenting tirelessly to keep kutch fabrics and weaving shining in the world market in the age of modernity, fashion and competition. They are the pioneer among the 1960s “Bhujodi Weavers Co-operative” and the recipient of Sant Kabir Award. Devji Bhai is equally artistic and creative in his own way. With delicate finest weaving he is a famous community Bhajan singer, locally known as bhajnik.
