Ghamani Bai – Traditional Artisan of Lambani /Banjara Embroidery

Ghamani Bai is practicing the spectacular handcrafted Lambani embroidery since many years. Ghamani Bai for years has been creating exquisite hand embroidered colourful pieces of clothing.

She says that traditionally, the Lambani women practiced their unique brand of embroidery to make their own traditional clothes.

National Award winner Ghamani Bai says that in spite of several problems Lambani tribal women are keeping the traditional craft of embroidery alive.

Lambani embroidery is commonly mistaken as Kutchi (Kachhi) embroidery because of mirror work, but shells and coins are unique to this type of embroidery. Also, the stitches used are different. Lambani embroidery uses as many as 14 types of stitches.

Lambani embroidery has now reached all over the world with the export of bed sheets and cushion covers in subtle colours but the heavily embroidered bags in flamboyant colours remain are a favorite among tourists.
