Abhay is fortunate to be born in an exclusive traditional Santoor family with its roots spanning over 9 generations over more than three hundred years. The legendrary Sufiana Gharana of Sopore, Kashmir is the only Hindustani Classical Music Gharana from Jammu and Kashmir. The Gharana has a unique combination of both vocal and traditional instrumental music with specialization in Santoor, Sitar, Sehtar (Kashmiri Sitar) and Wasool (Pakhawaj).
Abhay recorded his first song as a singer at the age of three for a musical feature for All India Radio composed by his first GURU his father Pandit Bhajan Sopori. At present Abhay is pursuing his Ph.D. in Music, though he is a graduate in Management and Computers with post gradution in Music. . Abhay is a knowledgeable musician who composed and conducted his first ‘J&K Folk Music Ensemble’ in 2003 featuring around 75 musicians. and since then has present the ensemble at various festivals in India and abroad. He is the only contemporary composer of India whose composition ‘Haftrang’ (seven colours in Kashmiri language) has been conducted by the legendary music maestro Zubin Mehta. Abhay scored the music for one of the greatest acclaimed fusion works presented in Kashmir in 2013 performed by the German ‘Bavarian State Orchestra’, one of the top most orchestras of the world.
At very young age Abhay has been honoured by several prestigious Awards, like the Sangeet Natak Akademy’s first “Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in (2006). In the year 2017“Atal Shikhar Samman” was presented to Abhay Rustum at the Parliament of India. In the new year 2020 he received the “Mahatma Gandhi Seva Medal”- Gandhi Global Peace Award by United Nations. The melodious musical journey of Abhay Rustum Sopori continues as he strikes the string on his Santoor with his magical hands.
