TRADITIONAL MASTER CRAFTSMAN OF JAMDANI SAREES (UPPADA KOTHAPALLI) NATIONAL MERIT CERTIFICATE AWARD WINNER
Profile of Artist:
The extremely popular Uppada ‘pattu Sarees’ woven with pure silk, gold and silver thread or real Zari, are handcrafted by L. V. V Satyanarayana, a much-preferred bridal costume. He did his graduation in Tele communications but due to family traditional business he joined his father and learned the skill of traditional weaving Jamdani Art Silk Sarees. Soon Satyanarayana became expert in intricate weaving of Jamdani sarees. At present around 150 local weavers work with him to manufacture exclusive silk sarees.
L. V.V. Satyanarayana appeals to everyone that cottage industry is the second largest industry in India but due to many reasons the numbers of weavers are decreasing. Handcrafted sarees have become popular but due to lack of marketing strategy and finance the younger generations do not want to come in this trade. The weavers are not encouraged; due to lack of marketing they do not get the proper wages. We really need to look into this issue if we want to keep our traditional weavers alive in future.
