TRADITIONAL LEATHER PUPPETRY ARTIST & PUPPET SHOW NATIONAL AWARD WINNER
Profile of Artist:
Sindhe Sriramulu is fortunate to be born in a traditional family of leather puppeteers. Sriramulu, a national award winning artist, continues to practice the art of his ancestors. He learned this art from his maternal uncle well known Shilp Guru D C Rao in making leather puppets. He makes a variety of items besides traditional puppets, he also makes lampshades. He exhibits and sells his work in exhibitions across the country.
The puppeteers of Nimmalakunta have refused to part with the traditional art they nourished and cherished for centuries. They have reinvented the art and it continues to thrive. Now a days the artisans and craftsmen have adapted themselves to changing times and needs. Sindhe Sriramulu, meanwhile, trains women in drawing and painting on puppets/lampshades as part of Kalakrithi.
Today, only a handful of families are taking this art form forward, as it requires complete dedication .
