ART HISTORIAN, ARTIST & ANIMATOR

Profile of Artist:

Dipanwita is a multi-faceted person, an artist, animator, film maker and an art historian. Born in Kolkata in 1963, she graduated from the Delhi College of Art in 1986 and trained as a water colourist under the guidance of Shri Bon Bihari Ghosh, renowned artist and mentor from Kala Bhavan, Shantiniketan.

Dipa completed her PhD in Visual Studies, (Mughal Art), School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in 2017.

She worked as a Subject Expert and Art Historical Researcher for an Exhibition of Indian Miniature Paintings at Staatliche Kunstammlungen Dresden (SKD), Germany (2016-2017).

Dipa also served as the Manager, Collection, Management and Research at Delhi Art Gallery, an auction and exhibition house dealing in artworks related to Indian Modernism, (2017 – 2019).

Presently, Dipa is a Research Associate in the International Research Project, “Bilderfahrzeuge: Aby Warburg’s Legacy and the Future of Iconology”, Max Weber Stiftung, India Branch Office (2019-2021). Alongside, Dipa teaches Art Criticism to post-graduate students of Painting at Delhi College of Art, Delhi University (2010-2013; 2019-2020).

As an animator Dipa’s documentary films has been screened in international animation film festivals held at Tokyo, Paris, Los Angles, Washington DC, Santa Fe, Hawaii and Australia. Her animation film, Pot of Gold was screened in Hollywood, Los Angeles, at the National Geographic All Roads Film Festival in October 2006.

As an artist, Dipa is deeply inspired by the rich tradition of painting in India and her quest to discover her roots have taken her into tribal areas in Central India and into the sublime heights of the Himalayas. Her paintings reflect her inner journey as she captures the quintessence of spiritual life caught in ‘moments of stillness’. Above all, through her paintings, Dipa strives to free herself and the viewer from the fleeting temporality of life, in an attempt to connect with the Immortal. She has participated in several exhibitions and shows and her works have found a treasured place in collections and art galleries in India, USA, Europe and Japan.
